SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY
It is our school policy that all children wear school uniform when attending school, or when participating in a school – organized event outside normal school hours.
Aims and objectives
Our policy on school uniform is based on the notion that school uniform:
- Promotes a sense of pride in the school;
- Engenders a sense of community and belonging towards the school;
- Is practical and smart;
- Identifies the children with the school;
- Prevents the children from coming to school in fashion clothes that could be distracting in Grade;
- Makes children feel equal to their peers in terms of appearance;
- Is regarded as suitable wear for school and good value for money by both parents/guardians;
- It is designed with health and safety in mind.
The school provides the full list of items needed for school uniform below. The uniform consists of:
Tuesdays and Thursdays
- Boys: white short sleeve shirt with red shorts.
- Girls: white shirts and red skirts (Leggings not permitted).
Wednesdays
Boys: school polo shirt and blue jeans trousers.
Girls: school polo shirt with blue jean trousers.
Fridays
All pupils/students are expected to appear in their physical education kit, which comprises of a white or red school t-shirt and black tracksuits carrying the school logo for both boys and girls.
SHOES:
Plain white shoes and white socks.
A complete set of school uniforms and a pair of sports outfit will be offered to pupils/students by the school administration as part of their enrollment package.
All items of clothing must be labelled with the child’s name. The school will not take responsibility for any lost items but we will do all that we can to locate them provided they are well labelled.
JEWELLERY
On health and safety grounds, our institutions do not allow students to wear jewelry to our school. The exceptions to this rule are earing studs for girls (no more than one pair) in pierced ears or wristwatch. We ask the children to either remove these objects during PE and games or cover them with a plaster to prevent them from causing injury.
MAKE -UP AND TATOOS
Make-up including nail vanish is not allowed to be worn during normal school hours. The school does not permit children to wear ‘tatoo’ style markings. Any child found wearing makeup or a tattoo style marking will be asked to remove it.
HAIRSTYLES
The school does not permit children to have extreme hairstyles that could serve as distractions to others.
All girls must have their natural hair No artificial hair or extensions will be allowed. Hair must be braided or combed neatly. Hair bands must be of natural colours (black, grey etc). All boys must have neatly cut hair.
We require all children to wear plain white shoes or tennis. Boots can be worn but only if they are plain white and lower than the knee, made of leather and do not have a high heel.
If any child arrives at school wearing anything other than the approved foot wear we will contact the parent or guardian and ask that they bring the correct shoes to school.
HOODED TOPS AND HATS
Hooded tops are allowed to be worn as a jacket but will be removed once inside the school campus.
Hats are not allowed inside the school campus
ROLE OF PARENTS/GUADIANS
We ask all parents/guardians and guardians who send their children to our school to support the school uniform policy. We believe parents/guardians have a duty to send their children to school correctly dressed and ready for their daily schoolwork. One of the responsibilities of parents/guardians is to ensure that their child has the correct uniform and that it is clean and in good condition
If any parent or guardian will like the school to modify the uniform policy, they should make representation, in the first instance to the Head Teacher/Principal.
If there are serious reasons why parents/guardians or guardians want their child to wear clothes that differ from the school uniform, the school will look sympathetically into such requests.
POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS AND BEHAVIORIAL POLICY
St. Michael’s Nursery, Primary and Secondary School (SAMINUPSS) Ngeme –Limbe has a culture, ethos and practical application of pursuing the highest academic, social and emotional expectation possible. The school believes that relationships and behavior are integral to our happy, healthy and safe learning community.
It is the primary aim of our school that every member of our school community feels happy, valued and respected and that each person is treated fairly and well. We are a caring community with mutual trust and respect for all. This policy is designed to promote good behaviour and not just to deter anti- social behavior.
PUPILS/STUDENTS AND STUDENTS
It is the responsibility of pupils/students and students to make good choices at all times.
Pupils/students and students should follow three simple rules to make good choices
- Follow instructions
- Keep hands feet and objects to themselves
- Use positive language (including body languages)
Step I – Statement of reality- tell them what you see (you are climbing over the fence).
Never ask a pupil/student or student why they are doing what they are doing. It is confrontational and you don’t actually need to know why they are doing it- they just need to stop it!
Step 2 – Describe the behaviour you want to see and end the statement with a thank you (you need to collect the ball by using the gate – thank you).
Step 3 – If they do not do as requested, use the language of choice. (If you continue to climb over the fence, you will receive a detention. It‘s your choice).This gives the pupil/student/student the responsibility for the punishment you will carry out (and you must deliver consequences or the pupil/student/student will learn that you do not follow threats through).
Most importantly, if after using the language of choice the pupil/student chooses to do the right thing, then you must praise them for making the right choice (Well done, you made the right choice).
Ignore them storming around or grumbling as they do the right thing- the most important thing is that they have made the right choice!
Should the pupil/student choose not to do as you have asked, then it is absolutely simple. You follow through with the consequences you stated.
STOPPING A GROUP OF PUPIL/STUDENTS/STUDENTS/STUDENTS
To get the attention of a group of pupil/students/students/students the adult must raise their hand. As the pupil/student notice this action, they do the same. In our school, the raising of hands means two things:
- Silent voices
- Empty hands
In our school, we use four different types of voices:
- Silent voice
- Partner voice
- Table voice
- Classroom voice
When pupil/students are walking into assembly, for example, they will be told to use a silent voice. A silent voice means no talking at all.

We inform parents/guardians immediately (no later than by the end of the day) if we have concerns about their child’s welfare or behaviour- this is applicable when a pupil/student receives a detention or if there is a pattern of regularly receiving warnings.
We expect parents/guardians to:

- Support their child’s learning by supervising the work the children do in school.

NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES
Staff at St. Michael’s Nursery, Primary and Secondary School (SAMINUPSS) Ngeme –Limbe apply consistently and clearly a hierarchy of negative consequences (our warnings’) if a pupil/student breaks a school rule. This is to ensure a safe and effective learning environment in which positive, happy, healthy relationships flourish.
We have a series of consequences for not following school rules:
- First Warning- recorded at the front of the room
- Second Warning – recorded at the front of the room
- Third Warning – recorded at the front of the room and the pupil/student is sent to their peer class for a time out to complete work/ and or reflection sheet (10 – 20 minutes)
- Fourth Warning – Pupil/student receives one play time detention and incident is recorded in the detention slip, parents/guardians are informed that day and the incident is recorded against the child’s profile.
Pupils/students who receive play time detention are given a Pupils/students Detention Slip informing them of the date of the detention and the reason for it. Playtime detention is served during morning playtime and are supervised by a member of staff. Pupils/students are expected to sit in silence when serving their detention. If the pupil/student does not follow this expectation, they will be require to repeat the detention and if noncompliance persist for a second consecutive day, then the pupil/student will serve the detention after school. This can be during the school day or out of school hours. When detention is outside school ours, teachers must give parents/guardians 24 hours’ notice. Outside school hours detention will last for a minimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of I hour; Pupils/students who are placed in outside of school hours detention are expected to complete school work. The Head Teacher/Principal will decide which member of school staff can put pupils/students in outside of school hour’s detention.
NOTE:
Unless behaviour is considered to be seriously unacceptable (bullying, verbal abuse, using racist or homophobic language, physical abuse and damage to school property) or 4 warnings have been given, then a detention should not be issued. The Head Teacher/Principal will rescind a detention if there is evidence that the policy has not been adhered to.
5. Internal Exclusion – Pupils/students who are consistently making poor choices may be placed in isolation away from other pupils/students for a limited period in the isolation room where they will complete work given to them by the class teacher. Pupils/students in isolation are supervised at all times and are able to leave the room of their own free will.
6. External Exclusion -The Head Teacher/Principal may issue an external exclusion where a pupil/student has:
- Committed a disciplinary offence ; and
- Allowing the pupil/student would seriously harm education and welfare of that pupil/student and others. In this case, parents/guardians will be notified of the decision to exclude a pupil/student and the reason for the exclusion. This will be done on the day of the exclusion being authorized by either direct phone contact or face- to- face meeting.
A pupil/student that has been excluded will have the reason for his/her exclusion explained to them by a member of staff so that they understand the nature of their misbehaviour
REASONABLE FORCE
The term reasonable force covers a broad range of items used by most school teachers at some point in their career that involves a degree of physical contact with pupil/students.
Force is usually used to control or restrain. This can range from guiding a pupil/student to safety by the arm through to more extreme circumstances such as breaking up a fight or when a student needs to be restrained to prevent violence or injury.
Reasonable in circumstance means using no more force that is needed.
Who can use reasonable force
– All members of school staff have a legal right to use reasonable force.
-This power applies to any member of staff at the school, it can also apply to people whom the Head Teacher/Principal has temporarily put in charge of pupil/students.
When can reasonable force be used
- Reasonable force can be used to prevent pupils/students from hurting themselves, or others, from damaging school property or from causing disorder.
- Preventing a pupil/student from behaving in a way that disrupts a school event or school field trip.
- Preventing a pupil/student from leaving the classroom where allowing the pupil/student to leave will risk their safety.
- Preventing a pupil/student from attacking a member of staff or another pupil/student.
- Restraining a pupil/student at risk of harming themselves through physical outburst.
Our School Cannot
- Use force as a punishment- it is always unlawful to use force as a punishment.
Positive Handling
- If a decision is made to use reasonable force to remove a disruptive pupil/student from Grade, this will be carried out by staff members who have received additional positive handling training.
Telling parents/guadians when force has been used
-If the use of force has been applied to a child, then a record will be made and the parent/guardian will be informed.
Bullying constitutes actions that are meant to be hurtful and which happen on a regular basis. Bullying can be direct (physical or verbal) or indirect (e.g. being ignored or not spoken to). All are treated extremely serious at St. Michael’s Nursery, Primary and Secondary School (SAMINUPSS) Ngeme –Limbe. All pupils/students are thought the phrase SAY NO GO TELL !!!- as a way of preventing. In school we have a secure box on the corridor in which pupils/students can post a slip if they want to talk to a member of staff about bullying. The box is opened every 2 days by the Head Teacher/Principal: Any pupil/student that has posted a slip will then be given an opportunity to speak in confidence with a member of staff.
The school does not tolerate bullying of any kind. If we discover that an act of bullying and intimidation has taken place, we act immediately to stop any further occurrence of such behaviour
RACISM
Like bullying, racism is prohibited in the school premises, even those where its people are all made up of one ethnicity.
A racist incident is defined as any incident which is perceived as racist by the victim or any other person. In our school, racist incidents are treated as seriously unacceptable conduct.

In line with other school policies, if medicines are prescribed 3 times a day, the expectation is that parents/guardians will give these medicines outside of school hours. If medicines are prescribed 4 times a day the school strongly encourages parents/guardians to make arrangements to come into school to administer these medicines themselves. Parents can also contact the school nurse with the prescription for the medicines to be administered
Pupils/students who are to receive medicines will be sent to the school infirmary and those of the nursery pupils/students will be accompanied by an adult.
Self-Management
Pupils/students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own medicine from an early age. A good example of this is pupils/students using their own asthma inhaler Parents/guardians must still complete a medical record form stating that the pupil/student will self-administer and sign the form.
